Using fonts from the LaTeX Font Catalogue

Not at all, I hardly ever configure texlive at all.  The fontconfig setting
is documented and only needed if you want to call fonts by name with xetex
from the texlive tree.
It is the only thing I do other than install it and run tlmgr update --all
every now and then.

What are these "many things" that you need to adjust?
