Hi Doug,
That depends on what you mean by a "typical" line of text. It varies quite
a bit among subjects.
If you take the realm of all words in the English language, as defined by
OED or MW it is 6.7%, but if you take a Shakeapearean text it will go down
to 4% and on scientific text it can go up to around 8%.
