Hi,
I tried your sample file, and got the same result for xetex as you did:
! Bad mathchar (67108904).
l.3 \mathchardef\tmp\mathcode`\(
?
> \tmp=\mathchar"0.
l.4 \show\tmp
?
)
No pages of output.
All others (tex, etx, pdftex, pdfetex) produce the following output:
> \tmp=\mathchar"4028.
l.4 \show\tmp
?
)
No pages of output.
This is with xetex running under 10.3.
