[XeTeX] dealing with $ character

hm, the problem is that computer modern si non standard and that in some 
cmr fonts there is a pound symbol instead; this is one of the reasons 
why font systems in tex are often so complex ... they start with cmr and 
then have to handle all kind of exceptions
