Odd -- I've noticed the same thing, but now that I try to recreate the problem, I cannot. I've tried it with Hoefler Text, Adobe Caslon|Garamond|Jenson Pro and there is no extra space before LaTeX at the beginning of a line. (XeTeX .994a)
