[XeTeX] xelatex and perltex: incompatibility?

Just to update you on communication from Scott Pakin:

He has:
> uploaded PerlTeX v1.6 to CTAN.  This version
> supports a --nopipe option that should disable the named-pipe
> optimization.  Look for it on CTAN in the next few days.

He also plans in the future:
> to include a xelatex-specific hack in perltex.pl to include a couple of
> dummy characters before the "\endinput".
