This will be a feature in the next released version of XeTeX.
> \useromanfont{font1.ttf}
This is possible with possibly bleeding-edge versions of XeTeX and
fontspec with the command
\fontspec[ExternalLocation]{font1.ttf}
or
\fontspec[ExternalLocation=/usr/fonts/]{font1.ttf}
to specify the path if the font's not in the working directory.
