[XeTeX] Stretching glyphs vertically?

Well... the real problem is that eventually I'd like to automatically  
generate a title page just by inputting the title and author. That  
means that somehow I'd have to calculate how big each word would be,  
and insert line breaks at appropriate places. I'm a programmer, so I'm  
not afraid to get into loops and calculations, but is there a way to  
(a) break up a string into words, and (b) compute the length of a  
given string in a given font?

I realize this has gone way beyond the original scope of the question :/
