[XeTeX] Should xelatex have its own kernel? (was: "Conflict between xunicode and fontspec?")

This is an interesting idea, but I guess the obvious response is that  
these things would have been done in LaTeX already if they didn't  
break compatibility somewhere. It's a very slippery slope :)
