I have only a Monotype TTF Garamond and can't see any of these
effects you describe.

	This is XeTeXk, Version 3.141592-2.2-0.997 (Web2C 7.5.6)
(format=xelatex 2008.2.3)
	This is XeTeX, Version 3.141592-2.2-0.997 (Web2C 7.5.6)
(format=xelatex 2007.12.21)
Package: fontspec 2007/09/01 v1.16 Advanced font selection for XeLaTeX
Package: xltxtra 2007/09/01 v0.3b Improvements for the "XeLaTeX" format

If you can reproduce the effects with other fonts (I can't) than it's
likely a fault related to XeTeX. Otherwise the MS font is faulty.

How many Microsoft engineers does it take to screw in a light-bulb?
None.
They just redefine "dark" as the new standard.
