By the way, such refinement is probably useless here, but I prefer the
following way :
\newcommand{\nuu}[2][]{%
\textit{#2}%
\begingroup\def\testtheargument{#1}\expandafter\endgroup
\ifx\testtheargument\@empty
\ETC.
