No, it should be possible to use the hyphenation patterns for
Sanskrit directly. As far as I can see sanskrit is doing something
similar and uses the patterns of  \prakrit:

\ifx\l at sanskrit\@undefined%
  \ifx\l at prakrit\@undefined%
    \xpg at nopatterns{Sanskrit}%
    \adddialect\l at sanskrit0%
  \else%
    \let\l at sanskrit=\l at prakrit%
  \fi%
\fi

So try this in your gloss-kannada:

\ifx\l at kannada\@undefined%
  \ifx\l at prakrit\@undefined%
    \xpg at nopatterns{Kannada}%
    \adddialect\l at kannada0%
  \else%
    \let\l at kannada=\l at prakrit%
  \fi%
\fi
