[XeTeX] pdf pictures rotated unintentionally

The code was just that  

\includegraphics[width=15cm]{filename}

except with a real file name.    I tried reducing the width but it made no difference.  I mean  it didn't even reduce the image size.  I wonder if this is a clue.
