[XeTeX] typesetting original with translation on top and bottom

Hi

I don't use grids for my typesetting, and to see how it used to be done 
'properly' I simply analysed old hot-metal-set editions, e.g. Oxford 
Medieval Texts from OUP.  From the reader's point of view, the most helpful 
arrangement is a close match of the page-breaks between text and 
translation, and since English tends to be more prolix than Latin I'm happy 
to adopt the traditional solution of bunching up the interlinear leading on 
the English pages where necessary (not to an unacceptable degree, of 
course).  I've seen editions where the policy is to leave yawning gaps of 
white space (usually in the original text rather than in the translation) - 
but as a purchaser of books I think I ought to be getting black rather than 
white for my money.

A couple of page-spreads attached to see the effect (just in case we're 
talking at cross purposes).
