[XeTeX] XeTeX terminates with inscrutable diagnostic "!Emergency stop"

For years I used XeLaTeX with English and Sanskrit text, with only a
huge \hyphenation{}
file
<https://github.com/wujastyk/xelatex/blob/main/sanskrit-hyphenations.tex>
to get the Sanskrit hyphenated.  I never saw that emergency stop.

Nowadays I use Polyglossia and do proper language-switching some of the
time, but not always.  (I'm lazy.)  Nary an emergency stop.  Maybe I've
just been lucky?
