Philip TaylorPhilip Taylor is a member of the Computer Centre at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College (University of London), reporting directly to the Director of Information Services (the latter subsumes both the Computer Centre and the Library).
He specialises in computer typesetting and electronic publishing. He is Technical Director of the NTS ("New Typesetting System") project, an international R&D project which is dedicated to the task of re-implementing TeX to form the basis of a typesetting system for the twenty-first century. The NTS group has already produced a first-generation TeX derivative, "e-TeX", and the second version is scheduled for release during November 1997.
He has been an invited guest at several overseas universities and research institutes, including the University of Waterloo, University of Waikato, and CSIRO (Division of Information Technology, Melbourne). He has presented a number of invited talks and tutorials, including
- "Advanced TeX" at Paris in 1991,
- "TeX Output Routines" at Aston in 1993,
- "Book Design for TeX Users -- theory and practice" at Hrdonov (Czech Republic), with Jiri Zlatuska in 1993,
- "Computer Typesetting or Electronic Publishing? New trends in scientific publication" at Torun (Poland) in 1995.
He has been an invited speaker at many meetings of DANTE (the German-speaking TeX user group) where he has also led a number of unrehearsed "Advanced TeX Problem Solving" sessions, and was most recently an invited speaker at the GUTenberg (French-speaking TeX user group) conference in Strasbourg.
He is Chairman of the National Typesetter Users Forum in the U.K. Within his College, he serves both as webmaster and postmaster, is a past President of the Senior Common Room, and is currently membership secretary of the Association of University Teachers and of the Senior Common Room.
He has designed and typeset a number of books, including

He is chairman of the TUG'98 Programme Committee and a member of the EuroTeX'98 Programme Committee.
