For what it is worth, we supply LucidaBright and MathTime fonts
with plain TeX and LaTeX 2.09 support as well.  Some people use them
that way.  But is true that the probability of running into hard-coded
OT1 assumptions (or worse) is higher.  But note that this happens
with some `LaTeX 2e' code as well...
