That is what I thought for a while.  Two reasons: its too much 
work making quality MM fonts when people aren't willing to pay
for the license, and the stripped down ATM that Adobe and MS
finally included in Windows does not have a "control panel" to
deal with MM font instance creation. 

So I thought MM was dead
when Adobe stopped making new MM fonts and made negative
noises about MM (around about the time they dropped Display
PostScript when Apple wanted to use it as their drawing model,
but did not want to pay anything for it).

But now I am not so sure, particularly since Adobe makes 
ATM 4.1Light available for free for all major platforms:
