[metapost] mptopdf: purge auxiliary files?

How would I do that? I tried

texmfstart mptopdf.pl --purge file.mp
texmfstart mptopdf.pl file.mp --purge
texmfstart --purge mptopdf.pl file.mp

to no avail. The script /usr/texbin/mptopdf itself issues

texmfstart mptopdf.pl "$@"

in TeXLive 2008.
