    can rely on return values ;-)

Well ... depending on what you're trying to detect. Zero/nonzero should
be pretty reliable for true errors, apart from strange cases like the
epstopdf thing, where there were umpteen moving parts.

In practice, the main thing that I've noticed is that overfull hbox
aren't considered errors (exit 0). That's generally the desirable
behavior, of course, but sometimes not, and have to resort to grep on
the log, or whatever.
