Well, every tried to
\input foo\ bar\ baz.tex
or,
\input /tmp/file~name~with~tilde.tex
Everything can be done, but it will not work trivially.
One more thing, I am not sure that updmap and fmtutil shell scripts on
unix are ready for saces in names.
