It's a horrible bodge as it is, but you could work on it (needs
\usepackage{amsmath}):
\begin{align}
foo &= bar\\[-3.3ex]
\text{How about this? }
\left\{ \vphantom{\frac00} \right. \hspace{1.7em} \nonumber\\[-3.3ex]
bar &= foo
\end{align}
